‘Best ideas come while sipping rum’ – Pavol Kazimir

The story of rum started in the 17th century when workers on sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean started distilling it from molasses.

The inaugural Joburg Craft Rum Festival was hosted at the Ground in Muldersdrift and was a celebration that had more than 15 local and international rum suppliers showcasing their products.

The event, which took place on Saturday, 2 June, gave visitors an opportunity to sample a large variety of craft rums while learning more about the rum-making process from the distillers. The festival also boasted live music, DJs and a variety of food stalls.

The story of rum started in the 17th century, when workers on sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean started distilling it from molasses. Not long after, the Royal Navy started issuing its sailors with a daily ration of rum, which ultimately contributed to the spirit’s growth in popularity across the world.

Since then, pirates have exchanged gold for rum, elections have been won because of rum and George Washington even insisted on a barrel of rum upon his inauguration.
