[WATCH] Local pilots conquer the sky and spread their wings

For the third year, pilot and navigator Dale de Klerk (from Alpi Aviation Fly School) and Dieter Böck maintained their fiercely competitive spirit when they competed in the President’s Trophy Air Race in May.

These two local pilots couldn’t have felt more at ease when they participated in the annual air race held in Bloemfontein.

The race, which was free for all to enter, saw a total of 45 crews – consisting of a pilot and a navigator – take on the challenge in hopes of flying away with the trophy.

According to Dale, pilots were placed behind the starting line based on their handicap, which is their fastest speed. On the first day, the aircraft were placed for take-off from high handicaps to low handicaps, and on the second day it was the other way around.

Not only did this duo come in eighth overall, but they also managed to bring back three trophies, including Best Airmanship, Fastest Speed Achieved and First Self-built Plane to cross the finish line.

With hard work, dedication and a passion for aviation, Dale and Dieter hope to return to the sky a year from now, only stronger and better.
