There’s no excuse for elder abuse
Approximately 50 residents gathered in the home's parking lot to raise awareness for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The recent sight of balloons released into the sky was not something to be overlooked, and neither were the events that took place on the ground.
It was none other than an annual awareness-raising event held at Môreglans Old Age Home. Approximately 50 residents gathered in the home’s parking lot to raise awareness for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
This day is usually characterised by the colour purple which often symbolises peace, dignity and royalty, among other things. Apart from several residents dressing themselves in this noble colour, purple ribbons, balloons and even trees decorated with purple cloths all contributed to a sight not to be missed.
Before releasing the balloons into the sky, each of the elderly took a fun walk around the greenery within the parking lot.
Residents were also pleasantly surprised when Quick Response Service and Mogale City Traffic Department paid a visit in support of the cause.
According to volunteers and organisers, Janine van der Berg and Amelia Hattingh, they celebrate WEAAD every year, and try to engage with residents as much as possible.
The residents also had great fun making some elder abuse awareness flags that were hung up in the old age home’s hall.
