[UPDATE] ‘This is what happened’ – witness to Voortrekker Road shootout speaks
Hettie recalls about seven shots being fired.
At about 11am on the morning of 27 June, local police and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred in Cilliers Street just off Voortrekker Road.
According to sources on scene, four suspects were allegedly driving a stolen vehicle and were involved in a robbery in the Zandspruit area.
Police subsequently pursued them to an open field near the train tracks along Cilliers Street where at least two suspects were shot.

“I and two clients were busy with a caravan handover on the corner of Voortrekker Road and Cilliers Street when we heard the first shot. At first I thought it was a car that had backfired, but then the shots repeated rapidly,” Hettie Coetzee from Kennis Caravans said.
“We then flung ourselves to the ground, crawled into the caravan, locked it and remained on the ground. The cars came speeding around the corner, while the shooting continued. We made it to safety just in time.”
Hettie recalls about seven shots being fired. The allegedly stolen vehicle soon came to standstill, approximately 30 metres from the caravan company, in a field.
“When we got out of the caravan, we discovered that one of our drivers – who was busy parking one of the company vehicles – had been shot at by the suspects. Luckily they missed and he didn’t get hurt,” she said.
Emergency services including ER24 soon arrived on scene where they treated the suspect’s injuries.
“We are relieved that none of our clients or staff were injured during the incident. And we would also like to thank the police for a job very well done,” Allan Vos, owner of Kennis Caravans concluded.
