Get ready for some serious cold weather coming our way

Now is the time to consider precautionary measures for gardens and livestock and so forth.

Storm Report SA has released a statement on its Facebook page, warning the country of some severe cold coming our way.

“We are currently monitoring three cold fronts, two of them severe. The weaker front is expected on Friday and will bring more rain relief to the Western Cape. On Monday is when the fun starts,” the post reads.

“Two severe cold fronts are making their way towards the country, with the first making landfall on Monday. This will be caused by two powerful pressure systems side-by-side. The first to take effect is a strong mid-latitude cyclone in the south. This will sweep the fronts into the south-western districts on Monday, 2 July, with maximum inland temperatures ranging from about 2 to 10 degrees Celsius.

“The crucial thing here is the powerful anti-cyclone which will follow with an estimated central pressure in excess of 1 034 hPa (millibars). The south winds blowing out of this monster will push the fronts far inland, as far as north as Namibia, during Tuesday and Wednesday. Except for the east, severe frosts can be expected over all the interior, with probable ‘black’ frosts at night caused by a freezing wind below zero degrees. So now is the time to consider precautionary measures for gardens and livestock and so forth,” said Mike Berridge.

Heavy rainfall and snow is also expected with these cold fronts.
