Makhulugama took back what belongs to them
The zama zamas live on the outer edge of the informal settlement. As they work in the mines they began stealing numerous dustbins to carry their tools etc.
After several months of keeping quiet, the residents of the Makhulugama informal settlement just outside of West Village decided to take back what’s rightfully theirs.
According to Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillor, Whitey Moleba, the settlement, which is also home to several ‘zama zamas’ (illegal miners), has fallen victim to recurring criminal acts.

“The zama zamas reside on the outer edge of the informal settlement. As they work in the mines, they start stealing dustbins that belong to the residents of Makhulugama,” he explained.
“They use the dustbins to carry tools, water, soil, and other things, on site.”
However, the community quickly grew tired of this, and decided to unite in an effort to recover their stolen dustbins.

“On Thursday, 19 June, the residents approached the zama zamas and I received a call from one of the residents asking for assistance. Transport was organised by the Department of Parks and Recreation to restore these dustbins to their rightful owners,” Whitey said.
On this day, approximately 52 dustbins were recovered from the zama zamas.
Whitey urges community members to mark their dustbins clearly and to look after their neighbours’ dustbins as well.
“If you know that your neighbour won’t be there on pick-up day, please put his dustbin back in his yard to prevent it from being stolen,” he said.
“We would like to thank the members of the community for their cooperation and for letting us know about the matter. We trust that they will now know how handle the situation in future. ”
