Couple hosting fundraiser for medical bills after losing baby girl

Roelof and Pikkie Roodt were thrilled when they found out that they were expecting their second child, a baby girl.

But they were crushed when their baby girl died only three days after being born.

They called her Leonie. Shortly after falling pregnant with her, the couple and their doctor discovered she had a heart defect during a routine check-up. Her paediatric cardiologist advised that she would need a pacemaker as soon as she was born.

Although Roelof and Pikkie are members of a medical aid, the specialist and his team were only available at a hospital not fully covered by the medical aid.

Despite their financial concerns, Roelof and Pikkie continued with their hopeful preparations and Rinie Oosthuizen volunteered to assist in raising funds for the additional medical costs.

Leonie was born on 27 May, surrounded by her team of doctors – perfect to behold. She was placed in an incubator with breathing assistance, but it was soon discovered she not only had the heart defect, but also only had one kidney and many other internal complications. Her parents had to hear the dreadful news that she wouldn’t live long.

Leonie died on 30 May.

Despite losing their child and being heartbroken because of it, the medical bills kept on piling up and they’re so far in debt they don’t even know how to get out.

In an attempt to pay some of their bills, they are selling tickets for the Big Top Rock (a rock’n’roll circus show) that will take place on 25 July in the Barnyard Theatre at Silverstar.

The funds raised will assist Roelof and Pikkie to pay their medical bills. For tickets, contact Rinie on 060 507 4755.
