Help girls this Mandela Day to stay in school during their periods

You might not have the time to do anything special on Mandela Day but you can sponsor pads and keep girls in school

If you have no idea what project to support on Mandela Day, and you can’t take off from work to spend time with an organisation, there are still ways you can participate by giving.

So many organisations just need a little help from the public, and helping them is easy.

One of the most worthy causes helps girls with something that they can’t avoid – having their periods. So many girls in South Africa miss three to five days of school every single month because they cannot afford sanitary pads. And while most people take their access to sanitary products for granted, these girls end up dropping out of school because they can’t deal with the embarrassment of leaking while at school.

Palesa Reusable Pads is an organisation that identified this as an incredibly big problem and developed a product that girls who can’t afford sanitary products can use – the Palesa Pad range.

The pads are made of reusable material which means once handed over to a girl she would have sanitary products for up to five years. And the products cost 20 per cent less than disposable pads. This provides a sustainable solution for the girls and keeps them in school.

Palesa Pads also do not end up as landfill as is the case with disposable pads.

The pads are hand-made and can last up to five years.

Because the girls would wash the pads themselves, the company developed a Flo Kit that includes pads, a bucket, soap and hand washing powder to ensure they have all they need long after they’ve received the donation. They also teach the girls how to use the pads and how to wash them.

Products prices range between R50 and R500 and once you’ve donated, the products are taken to less privileged areas, schools and informal settlements and handed over to hundreds of girls who need it.
