What food makes you think of Tata Madiba?

Since Madiba would’ve celebrated his 100th birthday this year, the News took to the streets to ask a few Krugersdorpers what they think about this well-known icon and the legacy he’s left behind.

The News asked random shoppers at President Square the same three questions:

1. What do you think about Nelson Mandela?

2. What do you think about Mandela Day?

3. If you were to describe him as any type of food, what would it be and why?

David Stricker, a resident from Krugersdorp CBD described Madiba as an exceptionally great man who set an example for many. According to David, Mandela has taught South Africans the real meaning of ‘Ubuntu’. “He knew no skin colour and everyone was the same to him. Mandela Day is also a good thing, but we don’t use the opportunity to it’s full potential. If he was to describe Madiba as a type of food, he would describe him as bobotie since it captures everything that’s South African.

Charmaine Croukamp from Wentworth Park also spoke fondly about Mandela’s legacy. “He is a very big icon and a great example. He was a very good person and did great things for our country. I would most definitely describe him as the father of the nation,” she said. She added that it’s a good thing to honour him on Mandela Day. Even though it might be ‘a bit much’ sometimes, she added that such a day is necessary. Charmaine would describe Madiba as a fresh salad since he was colourful, refreshing

After describing Mandela as a delicious pap and mogodu meal because of his humility, Magaliesburg resident, Jeremia Kamanga, also shared his view of this historic figure. “He was an icon, not only for South Africa, but for the entire world. He fought for the country and changed the way we do things. Everyone around the world knows him, and that’s why he can also be described as a legend,” he said. Jeremia views Madiba Day as a good day to serve people. He said that people strive to be better on this day.

Silverfields resident, Michelle Berczynski labelled Mandela Day as an important day to commemorate him and to keep him fresh in everyone’s memory.
“It’s such a pity that he isn’t with us any more. He had the ability to do so much for the country. He was a true statesman because he carried the concerns of all people and races. If more people were to be like him, the world would’ve been a better place,” she said.
With a strong flavour and a bit of everything, Mandela can be described as a hearty stew.

Muldersdrift resident Merriam Mlauzi described the father of the nation as a good man. “He helped the country with so many things and he didn’t only care for the nation, he cared for children and old people too. He cared for absolutely everyone in South Africa,” she said. She also marked 18 July as an important day on her calendar because it serves as an opportunity to remember everything he did for the country. According to Merriam, Madiba would be a birthday cake since a birthday is very special.

Kagiso resident, Tshepiso Segone (20) fondly described Nelson Mandela as an icon who played a great role in the transformation of the country. He also said that black South Africans are free because of his courage and thanked him for it. Even though he commends Madiba for his life’s work, he feels that Mandela Day might not be necessary since he has passed away. What type of food best describes Mandela? “Definitely a burger. Because everyone likes burgers,” he said laughingly.

It soon became clear that the overall feeling towards Tata Madiba was one of admiration, appreciation and respect.
