Local girl participates in World Choir Games with her choir

More than 300 choirs participated in the Games, held in South Africa for the first time ever.

Storm Venter, a learner at Monument Primary, is part of the Cantare Children’s Choir, which participated at the World Choir Games held during the recent school holidays.

The World Choir Games is the biggest choral event in the world, with about 300 choirs from all over the world participating.

And for the first time ever, the Games were held in Pretoria. This was a historic event as it was the first time the Games were hosted on the African continent. The opening ceremony was graced with the presence of Solly Msimanga, the Mayor of the City of Tshwane’s Metropolitan Municipality.

There was entertainment by some of the country’s best dancers and even one of the greatest local artists, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The games were also host to the new anthem for the games, One Voice, which was composed exclusively for the games by composer and conductor, John Ritter.

Storm and the other choir members had the privilege of representing their schools, the South Gauteng Province and also South Africa at this prestigious international event. The choir achieved a silver in the Children’s/ Mixed Boys category and a bronze in the Scenic Folklore Category.

The children were very nervous during their Scenic Folklore performance and it was understandable as they were up against top choirs like the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, Kearsney College and Tygerberg Children’s Choir.

“This was Storm’s first time competing at this level and I am extremely proud of her achievement,” said Sean Venter, Storm’s father.

“The choir only received one of each medal from Interkultur, but they are having replicas made for each choir member, which Storm will show at her school once she has received hers.”
