To play is just as important as learning
Key West Shopping Centre approached a local organisation for their Mandela Day initiative.
Nelson Mandela once said that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.
When it came time for Key West Shopping Centre to approach a local organisation for their Mandela Day initiative, they knocked on the door of Melodie van Brakel of The Cradle of Hope – a home of restoration for destitute women with children.

Melodie asked Key West for a simple donation which turned into an extraordinary gift – a reading and activities room for the children of the Cradle.
The management of Key West put their thinking caps on and approached some of their tenants for help, and on Mandela Day their plan took great shape.

“Initially we were not sure how everything would come together, but in the end it looked great,” said Maxine Oberholzer of Key West’s management.
Universal Paints Key West sponsored the paint for the room while Nes Blundell from NesNaks Art, a mural painter from Pretoria, transformed one of the walls into a chalk wall for the children. Bargain Books, CUM Books and The Educare Foundation sponsored the reading material for the room while Missouri Spur and Panarottis made sure everyone’s tummy was filled with some yummy burgers and pizza.

Melodie told the News that it takes R140 000 a month to keep the house going. She also said that more and more mothers with their children are arriving at the house looking for help.
