[FOLLOW UP] More clarity on green Monument Dam
The necessary test was conducted and what the results show is evident.
After a concerned reader requested the News to investigate why Monument Dam (next to Key West Shopping Centre) was so green, Key West’s management decided to take action.
In the article published in June, Key West’s management said they are contracted to an independent company which tests the water every six months. The next test was scheduled for September but was brought forward to June.

Even though the dam is not the property of Key West Shopping Centre and is managed by Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM), the Centre offers selected services to assist MCLM with the maintenance of the dam.
“In view of the recent complaints of sewage entering the dam, we can confirm that the necessary test was conducted and it is evident (based on the low nitrate and E. coli and faecal coliform bacteria) that there is no sewage pollution that can be described as causing pollution,” a statement from management reads.

“The organic material seen in the water is due to the lack of rain during winter months, which assists with additional circulation. This teamed with the ambient temperature still being relatively warm, allows for biodegradation of organic matter on the shallow part of the dam.
“The only solution to partially alleviate this is to continue with the artificial rotation of water through a pump system that was introduced by Key West Shopping Centre a few years ago. We believe these results will alleviate the concerns of the local residents.”
