Disadvantaged residents of Munsieville educated by pastor and team

The residents received certificates in Occupational Health and Safety which means they will now have a fighting chance as job-seekers.

ToekomsVenster/ FutureWindow is a non-profit organisation run by Reverend Jannie Pelser, a well-known and long-time resident of Krugersdorp.

FutureWindow manages several community outreach programmes in Krugersdorp. Its training programme has been developed to afford persons from disadvantaged communities, in this instance, Munsieville, the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge and skills that would enable them to access the labour market more easily, and to contribute to the well-being and development of its students.

In the organisation’s latest success story, 17 unemployed persons from Munsieville successfully completed an Occupational Health and Safety Representative (OHS) course offered by PeopleCert, a private accredited training company.

The owner of the company, Jacques van Tonder, presented the course, which consisted of six modules – legal liability, basic risk assessor, incident investigation, fire safety, implementation of an occupational health and safety programme, and functions of a safety and health representative.

OHS officers coordinate health and safety systems in an organisation. They identify hazards and assess risks to health and safety, put appropriate safety controls in place, and provide prevention and occupational health services to employees.

When accidents occur, it is the Health and Safety officer who leads investigations, identifies the causes and advises on improvements in safety standards that need to be made.

Reverend Pelser explained that this qualification would give these students an advantage over other job-seekers the next time they apply for a job, as it is a sought-after qualification. The group also wants to thank Perfect Water for being one of their greatest sponsors.
