Cha-cha real smooth
A local dancer, who is a member of Jive Pro's Dance Academy in Roodepoort, managed to walk away the winner of a provincial dance competition.
A local dancer, Minette Marais, stunned the crowd when she competed in the Social Faculty Gauteng Provincial Dance Championships that was held in Rivonia during the weekend of 30 June and 1 July.
This talented performer, who is a member of Jive Pro’s Dance Academy in Roodepoort, managed to walk away the winner of the American Rhythm division. The division includes the Cha-cha, the Rumba and the East Coast Slide (which is also known as the Jive).

Some of the other divisions included Professional Latin, American Smooth, American Speciality, Intermediate Ballet and Hip-Hop.
With her dance instructor, Happy Seitlhamo, as partner they danced circles around their opponents from all over Gauteng. This follows after Minette, who’s been dancing for the past five years, came second in the South African Dance Foundation’s (SADF) Social National Championships.
“It’s tough on the dance floor, since dancers are judged on various criteria. This includes the dancers’ physique, their connection with the dance and their partners, their costumes and how well groomed they are,” she explained.
“Nevertheless, this experience was interesting and beautiful to say the least. I saw the most beautiful dresses, styles and so much passion too.”
Minette added that she will now be preparing for the ‘Dancing Under the African Skies’ competition that will take place later this year in August.
“You dance with your heart and with your soul. It’s more than just healthy exercise – it’s therapy. My motto is simply to dance to the beat of life,” she concluded.
