Police visit creche and show off their skills

They had dogs from the K9 unit, horses from the mounted unit and officers from the Flying Squad to demonstrate what they do every day.

Police officers stationed on the greater West Rand paid a visit to Laerskool Kenmare’s Knikkies Kleuterskool today, 3 August, to show off both their skills and the skills of the animals they use to catch criminals.

When the West Rand Flying Squad and members of the Vaalrand Mounted Unit arrived on the field, the 30 or so preschoolers’ mouths hung open as the sirens blared and the blue and white lights lit up the sky.

First up was Warrant Officer Renier Henning of the K9 Search and Rescue Unit with his dog, Tyson. The children had the opportunity to pet the dog while Renier taught them about how the dog can track them if they ever get lost.

Then he took off his bulletproof vest and had the children each feel how heavy it is.

“I’m strong, look, I can pick it up,” one of the preschoolers said. “Yes, but would you be able to wear it for an entire day?” Renier asked the children.

Next up was the drug-sniffing phenomenon, Jesse, who has been in the force for more than seven years. Renier and another officer demonstrated how Jesse can sniff out a drop of blood hidden in one of five cones. When she smells the drop of blood, she sits down and gets rewarded with a tennis ball.

Last but not least, the mounted unit showed their horses to the children.

They explained to the children that horses’ feet are like nails and to protect them they give the horses “shoes”. Then they showed them how to saddle the horses and what gear they use to catch suspects.

“Policemen are your friends. They’re there to help you,” said Karen du Plessis, spokesperson for the Flying Squad and K9 Unit.
