Taxi hits pedestrian in Ruimsig – driver allegedly flees the scene

The pedestrian had numerous injuries and was in a critical condition.

A man believed to be in his 30s was left critically injured on Friday afternoon, 3 August, when he was knocked over by a taxi at the Hendrik Potgieter and Van Der Kloof Roads intersection in Ruimsig.

An ER24 statement said they arrived on the scene to find the taxi in the left-hand lane while the pedestrian was found lying in the emergency lane.

“Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition. The man was treated for his injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions before he was transported to Leratong Hospital for urgent treatment. The driver of the taxi escaped injury,” the statement reads.

According to Rudie Basson, who posted his eyewitness account of the incident on Facebook, the taxi driver abandoned his vehicle and jumped into another taxi, escaping the scene.

Basson later updated his post saying that the victim was in a critical condition in hospital and that he is a chef at a local restaurant and wedding venue.

Local authorities were on the scene later to conduct their investigations.
