#CaxtonCares – Florida runners issue challenge to other running clubs

Campaign going strong

The ‘Drop a pair and show you care’ campaign is slowly gathering momentum.

Adielah Johnson, the Get It SPAR Women’s Challenge Joburg Face of the Race 2018 wishes to collect 500 pairs of running shoes by the end of September, which will be donated to underprivileged runners.

“When I ran the Spar Race last year, I noticed that a lot of the runners ran barefoot. This year we would like to collect any and all takkies and running shoes to donate to these up-and-coming runners,” she explained.

She was pleasantly surprised recently when she received 16 pairs of good running shoes from members of the Florida Running Club, where she participates in the weekly time trials. “Two pairs are still in boxes and practically new!” she said.

Approximately 35 pairs of shoes have already been donated, and Adielah said, “Some of my colleagues have made cash donations, which I will use to buy new shoes”.

Adielah added that club members, as well as members of the community who would like to join in on this initiative, can bring their donations to the club every Tuesday evening from 5.30pm. “There will be a box for donations until the end of September. The club is situated on Jan Hofmeyr Avenue, Florida Park,” said Adielah.

Laurie Lewis from the Florida Running Club issued a challenge to all other running clubs on the West Rand, and said, “We, as Florida Running Club, challenge the other clubs to join this worthy initiative. Let’s see how many pairs of shoes we can collect.”

Caxton Joburg West will be teaming up with Adielah to help her reach her target, and is urging all athletes, joggers and everyday sports enthusiasts to donate their unwanted running shoes that are still in a good condition.

Shoes can also be dropped off at the Caxton office, on the corner of Generaal Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street, Witpoortjie.
