The West Rand Development Agency (WRDA) in partnership with the Mogale Arts and Heritage Development successfully launched the much-anticipated Magaliesburg Battlefields route, with a view to promoting economic development and the social well-being of its residents.

The launch was held at the Misty Hills Country Hotel in Muldersdrift. They brought in historians and specialist who studied the Anglo Boer War very closely. Most importantly, the launch exposed the audience to hidden treasures of information with regards to the battlefields located in Gauteng and North West.

According to Terrence Mokale, non-executive director and Board chairperson of the WRDA, the Magaliesburg Battlefields tours will seek to uncover additional information about various aspects of the SA War as it manifested in the West Rand region.

Mokale said the battlefields routes will have as their starting point a Visitors Information Centre which will be built at the Misty Hills Country Hotel. Mokale said his team will bring in tour guides and owners of hospitality establishment with the aim of creating an infrastructure which will benefit all parties involved in the project.

The WRDA is offering trial tours and is working with the Magaliesburg Association for Culture and Heritage (MACH) to put up blue plaques at significant points on the route.

The blue plaque has become a standard international symbol for marking places of historical significance. Messages of support were received from both the WRDM and Gauteng provincial government.
