Nailed it!
'I really enjoy this form of art – from simple to intricate designs. I want to continue to challenge myself with new designs and ideas.'
Recently a local nail technician proved that nails aren’t just for scratching when she created 10 miniature works of art which landed her third place in a national nail-art competition.
It is none other than Melissa de Wet who entered the Steam Punk themed NailFile Photographic Nail Design Challenge hosted by the Professional Beauty Magazine.
According to Melissa this competition is hosted four times a year with a different theme for each one. The themes for this year are Pop Art, Glam Rock, Steam Punk and Fantastic Beasts.

However, Steam Punk is a set she always dreamed of doing, but she was never able to find a client willing to do such a creative and complex set.
She said that the textures were achieved by incorporating real gears into the 2D hand-painted gear design. The set, which took her seven hours to complete, also featured clock faces that were inspired by the evolution of Steam Punk itself.
She has already completed her next set of intricate nail art, eager to compete in the Fantastic Beasts themed competition, which will be the last one for 2018.
Melissa, who opened her own salon last year, hopes to one day be a mentor for other enthusiasts like herself. She would also like to compete in as many competitions as possible, including on international level.
