The unrest started after a meeting with the Mayor provided them with unacceptable answers to their questions regarding housing.
There have been reports that the protest action will not stop and will escalate.
Reports are doing the round that an illegal land-grab by the unhappy protesters will take place soon. In the meantime, residents have been forced to lock themselves inside their homes after most of the entry roads to the area have been blocked off by the protesters.
There is still no word from Mogale City Local Municipality about the situation and the alleged promises made by the Mayor.
According to Moses Dlamini, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the police are conducting a preliminary investigation into the death of a 45-year-old man. It is believed that the man, one of the protestors, was shot during the protest action and died on his way to hospital.
Dlamini said it is not yet clear whether the man was shot by the police or by a member of the local Community Policing Forum; therefore they first need to investigate the police’s involvement.
He added that if it emerges that the police were involved in the man’s death, they will conduct a full investigation.
