Justice for man who was killed during community outrage

After accusing a man of armed robbery and murder, a man was killed by people who decided to take the law into their own hands.

A man was murdered in the Soul City informal settlement on 4 November at 10.30am.

A group of people accused the man of shooting and killing a local shebeen owner during a robbery the previous night.

The man was first stoned by the group of attackers and later burnt to death at a nearby sports ground.

The community was not forthcoming or willing to assist the police during their investigation, but according to Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, that did not stop them and instead they just committed themselves to working more closely with the Soul City community.

On 30 November, their efforts paid off when a man, believed to be the mob justice instigator, was arrested at about 1am, after the community had informed the police of his whereabouts.

He was detained at the Kagiso Police Station and charged with murder.

The 38-year-old man has appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court and was remanded into police custody, pending further investigation and a bail application.
