Cable thieves stopped by armed response security

Three men were found near an open manhole, attempting to steal power cables near Silverstar Casino.

Three men were found trying to steal electric cables near Silverstar early this morning.

A post on Facebook stated that at about 2am, Drift Reaction’s control centre received a report from a guard stationed at one of the nearby residential complexes. Residents had called in to say they were hearing noises behind a perimeter wall.

Drift Reaction units responded, and quickly noticed three men hiding in the bushes, communicating with one another through hand signals.

A reaction unit entered a complex with permission from the residents, where he tracked the three men’s movements. The suspects started running at this point and reaction units pursued one of them into the electrical substation on the grounds of Silverstar. Searching between the high voltage transformers, the reaction units finally found the suspect. On him, he had a cellphone and scissors for cutting electrical wires.

The area was thoroughly searched. An open manhole with the covering slab held up by stones was found. This apparently acted as an entrance into an underground tunnel where the electrical cables running to the area were located. Other equipment, including a saw and a hydraulic jack, was also found.

After the man was arrested, it was discovered that he and his two accomplices are illegal immigrants from Mozambique. Their residence was searched shortly thereafter, but it seemed that the men had hurriedly packed and left. The identities of other two men, who are on the run, remain unknown.
