Two arrested for disrupting IEC registration

Moshongoville leaders were arrested earlier in this week on charges surrounding the disruption of voters' registration during the weekend.

On Wednesday, 29 January, two men were arrested for their actions at the Munsieville voters’ registration stations on Saturday and Sunday.

Lucas Mohlobodi and Robert Gumede are two of the leaders of the Moshongoville suburb community, and it’s believed that they were in charge of physically blocking off IEC stations and stopping residents from registering for the upcoming national and provincial elections.

If you are new to this story, more than 2 000 Moshongoville residents marched to Town Hall on Friday, 25 January, to hand over a memorandum to the Mayor, demanding improvements to various infrastructures in the settlement. During the weekend, they opted to stop registrations at certain IEC stations in Munsieville, stating that they would not allow people to vote until they’d received the upgrades to their infrastructure as requested.

The two community leaders were ordered to appear in court at 9am today, Wednesday, 30 January. Community members said that they will be present to support their leaders.
