Children and teachers from St Ursula’s School each waited their turn to donate blood to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently.
According to Belinda Espag from the school, they chose to host this blood drive because blood is something you can donate immediately, it costs you nothing to give and it saves multiple lives.
When you donate one unit of blood you can save up to three lives, as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
According to the SANBS website only one in every 140 people are blood donors. This means that the nation is almost always close to running out of blood stock, and is placing the lives of thousands of people in danger.
If you have an organisation or company and want to organise a blood drive, you can go to the SANBS website at https://www.sanbs.org.za and fill in the ‘Book a blood drive’ form.
