Employee bust for stealing cables

An employee at a Hekpoort electrical shop was caught stealing and trying to ship his stolen goods to Malawi.

The Hekpoort Police arrested a 32-year-old man on Monday, after a theft at Electro Link, a shop in the Hekpoort area.

The 49-year-old business owner said that he had gone to his office on Saturday, 26 January, to check on the shop’s CCTV footage.

He saw one of the employees, a technician, taking more electric cables than necessary from the storeroom. He was only supposed to take two bundles a day.

On Monday, the owner checked the storeroom and found that 59 rolls of electric cable had been stolen, as well as a starter box cable, ties, solar lights and 11 metres of 185mm copper cable.

The cable and some other items were recovered in Kempton Park, packed and allegedly waiting for transport to Malawi.

The employee was arrested and will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.
