According to Captain Solomon Sibiya, the cash van had just arrived at the shopping centre when a man in a wheelchair was let into the Post Office first, because of his apparent condition.
Once his accomplice had wheeled him inside, he stood up, and both of them drew their firearms.
They demanded the cash and as they were fleeing the scene, a shootout ensued between the men and the guards.
A 50-year-old bystander was withdrawing cash from a nearby ATM when a stray bullet grazed his head.
He was immediately rushed to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
