Man struck by lightning while seeking cover
A man was taking cover from a thunderstorm yesterday when he was struck by lightning.
A young man was struck by lightning during Thursday afternoon’s thunderstorm.
According to a statement by Netcare 911’s media liaison officer, Shawn Herbst, they responded to a call-out to 4th Street, Krugersdorp North just before 1pm where a 25-year-old man had been struck by lightning.

It was reported that the man had been cutting grass during the thunderstorm. He and his colleagues took shelter under a tree when lightning struck. Fortunately his colleagues escaped without serious injury.

According to the statement, when paramedics assessed the man they found that he had serious burn wounds across a large portion of his body. He also had cardiac complications.
“The patient required advanced life support intervention to stabilise him and due to the nature of his injuries the Netcare 2 helicopter air ambulance was called to the scene,” said Herbst.

After being treated at the scene, the victim was flown to a specialised facility in Johannesburg that can provide the treatment he needed.
