Three cars set alight in mysterious arson case

A case of arson in Krugersdorp North has a local resident baffled. She is asking anyone with information to please assist.

In the early hours of Sunday, 3 November, Alta du Toit woke up to chaos as her and her tenants’ cars were on fire

Alta lives on a property in De Wet Street, Krugersdorp North with her friend, Danie Janse van Rensburg, an elderly couple and another tenant.

She said that after celebrating the Springboks’ win over England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final, she returned home at about 8pm.

Danie had gone to watch the rugby with his family and her children were out. At about 11pm on Saturday, she woke up to her son knocking on the door.

After opening the door for him, they went back to sleep. Disaster struck when she was woken up by Danie at about 3.15am.

When they got outside the flames had already burnt through the roof of her Mercedes-Benz C250 AMG. The elderly couple’s Kia Picanto was parked next to hers and a Ford Fiesta in front of her car.

The Kia and the Ford also caught fire and started to burn. The only thing that did not perish in the fire was Alta’s Bible which was in her car along with her handbag which contained all her documents.

Alta explained that they believe someone jumped over the wall, poured petrol on the three cars and set the Mercedes alight. A case of arson has been opened with the Krugersdorp Police.

She has no idea why anyone would want to do that and asked anyone who saw anything or has any information that can help them, to please come forward.

If you have any information that can help Alta, it can be forwarded to News journalist Natasha Pretorius at natashap@caxton.co.za.
