The modern poet
He has centred his heart and soul on poetry. Now, Rabbie Serumula wants to bring poetry into everyone's lives.
Poetry is the ___ of the soul. You can fill in the blank yourself, because poetry means something different to each person.
But, the importance of poetry can not be understated, through history or today.
Rabbie Serumula loved working in the news media when he was younger, but his true love always lay somewhere else. He found his mind drifting to the arts.
Today, he regularly takes to the stage to perform his spoken word poetry sets, to great acclaim. In 2017, he won the Best Showcase Award from the Word ‘n Sound Live Literature Company. He was inspired to do his own thing and, along with two associates, started the Magnum Opus Poetry Foundation.
A couple of weeks ago they held their Cosmos Tribe Two show in Johannesburg where big and small, well-known and unknown artists performed on the same platform.
Rabbie has also put a lot of work in with a group of other authors, writing the culture-defining The Black Consciousness Reader. The book is described as being “an essential collection of history, interviews and opinions about the philosophy being revived to finally bring revolution to South Africa. This would not be so much a violent overthrow as a deep change to a nation’s thinking to properly acknowledge its Blackness.”
Rabbie wrote specifically about art and consciousness, and how each person’s perspective changes what art means to him.
