Municipality in the dark about why parts of West Rand were without power early this morning

Krugersdorp and other West Rand areas were affected for a few hours during this morning by an unexplained power outage.

A power shutdown which affected West Rand towns such as Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Carletonville, Fochville and a few others occurred during the early hours of this morning, 30 January, from about 1am to 5am.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has stated that the power outage was not caused by the municipalities, but rather Eskom itself. Eskom was contacted and a media statement is pending.

A MCLM spokesperson also noted that they do not believe that the shutdown has any connection with their Eskom debt, which the municipality has already made payments towards. The municipality is also not aware of any reasons why Eskom would have turned off power during these hours. No statement or warning was sent out beforehand, and no load-shedding was scheduled for this time.

An Eskom statement will be posted when received.
