Mogale City elects new mayor during special council meeting

Council quorated despite the opposition parties’ coalition led by the Democratic Alliance choosing not to attend the council meeting.

Mogale City Local Municipality has a new executive mayor, Councillor Francis Makgatho.

Makgatho was elected as the new mayor of the MCLM at a Special Council Meeting held on Friday, 28 February. Council quorated despite the opposition parties’ coalition led by the Democratic Alliance choosing not to attend the council meeting.

The DA submitted their apology citing another engagement, while the EFF and Freedom Front Plus did not submit any apologies.

In his acceptance speech, Makgatho said, “Thank you to the ANC caucus for entrusting me with the opportunity to serve the community. I acknowledge the work done by the late executive mayor, Naga Patrick Lipudi.

“I also want to acknowledge the tribute by the Gauteng Lekgotla to the late executive mayor, as I have learned a lot from him about politics and governance, as guided by the four cardinal pillars of ‘unity, renewal, service and integrity’.”

MCLM has been without a mayor after the untimely passing of Lipudi on 12 January this year.

Makgatho is the fourth executive mayor of Mogale City since the 2016 Local Government Elections. He followed in the footsteps of the DA’s Lynn Pannall who resigned due to ill health, and was subsequently replaced by Michael Holenstein.

The late Lipudi was elected mayor of MCLM in 2017 when Holenstein was voted out after a motion of no confidence.
