A concerned citizen did not turn a blind eye when he saw someone breaking into a house. His quick thinking helped the police to catch the perpetrator.
In a statement sent by Kagiso Police’s spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, he explained that the police arrested a man in his late 20s on 9 March at 8.30am after catching him in the house he had broken into.
“The man had just broken into a house when a concerned resident who was passing by noticed him,” said Sibiya.
The eyewitness then alerted police who were patrolling the area to what was happening and led them to the house.
Police found the intruder still ransacking the house. He had a school bag and laptop, which he had already stolen from the house, in his possession. He was arrested and taken to the Kagiso Police Station.
Sibiya said the man entered the house by breaking open the door and burglar locks, using an unknown object.
“The witness did not turn a blind eye to the kind of crime that is giving residents of Tshepisong sleepless nights.”
The homeowner, who was not at home at the time, was later informed about the incident.
The man had appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court, facing charges for housebreaking and theft. He was remanded in custody for further police investigation.
Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Maduna, praised the witness for his positive contribution that led to the apprehension of the suspect.
“Working together with the police will benefit our residents in a long way. Neighbourhood watches must be the culture of all sectors in our area,” Maduna concluded.
