Police warn that criminals operate best when it is dark

The police warn the community about the dangers when being out after dark. Driving alone and parking in secluded area are some of the things that can put one at risk.

The Kagiso Police have issued a warning to community members about the dangers that lurk in the dark.

In a statement sent by Kagiso Police’s spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya he warned that couples and lovebirds must think twice before parking in open spaces late at night, and urged them to be very aware of their surroundings. People must also refrain from driving alone at night, especially after partying; picking up hitchhikers; or asking favours or lifts from strangers whilst at a nightclub, tavern, shebeen, or any social gathering.

“The Kagiso Police management is concerned that such behaviour is putting lives at risk,” said Sibiya, explaining that people could be raped, or robbed of their personal belongings or vehicle.

“Kagiso Police view such behaviour as irresponsible and careless, also taking into consideration that some ‘victims’ might open false cases for insurance purposes,” he added.

Once a case has been opened and the police suspect foul play, the matter will be investigated, adding that the police have no intention of discouraging anyone from reporting a hijacking or any similar cases.

“We are therefore appealing to members of the public to take extra precautions, especially at night as criminals operate at their best when it is dark.”
