The town has settled down after an anxious week of wondering about and preparing for the 21-day lockdown that commenced at midnight on 26 March.
As Mogale City residents eased into this new way of life, at least for the time being, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) and its Executive Mayor, Councillor Francis Makgatho, were there to help the process along.
Addressing the people, Mayor Makgatho wanted to reassure residents that, “the municipality will continue to prioritise service delivery while taking the required precautionary measures to guarantee the safety of our employees who will be working during the lockdown”.

In addition to putting the Shutdown Business Continuity Plan (see page XX) into operation, Makgatho has also “instructed Community Development Services to ensure that the sick, weak and homeless do not find themselves vulnerable during this period”.
He added that, “working together with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, we will ensure the vulnerable are accommodated at a safe place or shelter, provided with food, care and hygiene, adhering to the guidelines provided by the National Department of Health”.
MCLM is also part of the West Rand District Municipality’s Intergovernmental Government Relations programme, as well as the “Local War Room”, as the Mayor puts it, of the Dr Yusuf Dadoo and Leratong Hospitals.
The War Room is said to help manage the spread of the virus and the release of new information relating to the evolving novel coronavirus.
“We appeal to the residents of Mogale City to stay calm during this period, and to resist panic-buying at all cost, while scaling down movement which is in the best interest of our community and nation. As we have learnt from global scenarios, the most reliable method of avoiding the spread of Covid-19 right now is to stay at home,” Makgatho said.
“Be safe. Stay home. Protect yourself and others.”
