Food parcels managed and distributed by the Province, not by Mogale

The statement said the municipality's Community Development Services that would ordinarily assist or be part of such projects is not involved in this process and will only provide support when such a request from the provincial government has been received.

In response a recent Democratic Alliance media statement which was published on the News’ website, titled Local council has forgotten about the people of Munsieville, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) wishes to inform the public that food parcels are distributed by the Gauteng Department of Social Development and not the municipality.

“Province has set up their own system of identifying beneficiaries and effect the distribution of food parcels, which is done through complying non-government organisations. This approach was adopted by Province after problems were experienced during the beginning of the Covid-19 Lockdown period when councillors were involved in the allocation and distribution,” a communique from MCLM’s communications department reads.

The statement said the municipality’s Community Development Services that would ordinarily assist or be part of such projects is not involved in this process and will only provide support when such a request from the provincial government has been received.

“There’s also the distribution of food parcels by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and 22 June’s distribution was done only from Town Hall – so, as much as the hall is used, the criteria, beneficiaries and overall management of this project are not determined by the municipality.”

While clarifying this to the affected community of Munsieville, the municipality further makes an earnest request to both the News who have received this information before and the DA to desist from associating the municipality from any occurrences emanating from the management and distribution of food parcels.”
