Eskom customers are encouraged to continue buying their prepaid electricity tokens only from authorised legal vendors. One way of identifying illegal tokens is that unscrupulous persons normally sell them at a much cheaper price than the actual cost of electricity.
Eskom monitors the electricity consumption patterns to determine any abnormalities and any illegal activities performed on the meters, which include bypassing and vandalism.Should a customer’s meter be found with tokens purchased from illegal entities or individuals, the customer’s electricity supply will be terminated immediately.
The customer will, in addition, be fined with a tamper fee. Furthermore, criminal charges will be registered with the law-enforcement agency in case of infringement.
Eskom advises you that:
- A legal vendor will have a vendor identification sticker or sign on their premises. The sticker is issued by Eskom
- A legal vendor is not allowed to charge an additional fee for buying prepaid electricity
- Legal vendors only sell the correct amount of electricity for the amount paid for
“You should rather use safer and more convenient ways to buy prepaid electricity, like bank apps and the EasyPay website.”
Prepaid electricity empowers customers to manage their expenditure and consumption better Buying illegal electricity vouchers is a crime and is punishable by law.
