Residents of Begin Street are well fed up with what goes on on the sidewalk across from their homes every weekend.
From about 2pm on a Friday, according to homeowner Tom Lessing, people start gathering on the sidewalk along the shopping centre grounds.
Cars pull up, folding chairs are set up and, as Tom noted, alcoholic beverages are opened and consumed in full view of the public. The party just grows throughout the weekend until the night hours of every Sunday.
Adrian Amod of Mogale City Local Municipality’s Corporate Communications said, “Three areas of concern have been raised for municipal interventions whilst only two fall within our area of duty and accountability.
Mogale Public Safety has been requested to monitor the sidewalk, ward off reveller gatherings and engage the South African Police Services with regards to public consumption of alcohol, which is illegal, an offence and a police competence.
“On the second issue of litter and waste, stemming from ongoing revelling, the municipality’s Parks and Waste Management sections, upon receipt of the complaint conducted an inspection. A team was thereafter dispatched to clean the site.”
MCLM has promised to monitor this area of concern “… to reduce and put an end to the blaring gatherings, whilst engaging our colleagues at the police to assist with the public drinking challenge,” Adrian added, ending with a request.
The municipality would also like to plead with residents to work hand in hand with us in keeping our public spaces clean.”
