The Magaliesburg Police arrested a 32-year-old man for being in possession of nyaope with an estimated value of R8 000.
In a statement, the Magaliesburg Police communications officer, Sergeant Rebecca Phithi explained that the man was arrested on Monday, 2 November at about 12 moon at the Magaliesburg Post Office.
“The crime-prevention members spotted the man while they were conducting their routine visits to the post office, as they are mandated to check post offices on a daily basis for possible robberies that might take place, especially during payout days and as we approach the festive season,” she explained.
The man seemed not as ease and that raised the police’s suspicion. The members then searched him and found smaller packets of nyaope wrapped in brown plastic.
She said Captain Alex Mafhungo, the acting Magaliesburg Police station commander applauded the police members who had made the arrest.
He also issued a warning to others who are selling these drugs in the community, to refrain from doing so. She added that no mercy will be shown to anyone who is found selling or in possession of such drugs.
“They will be arrested immediately and will face the consequences, as these drugs are destroying the health and future of people, more especially the youth.”
The suspect will be appearing in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court.
The police are also urging the community to report anyone who might be selling any illegal drugs. They can contact the police anonymously by phoning the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111, use the My SAPS app, or alternatively SMS the information to 32211.
