Body of man found floating in Rietvallei dam

Police said they received a call from a member of the community who informed them about a drowning.

The body of an unknown man aged between 27 and 30 years was found floating in a dam in Rietvallei on Tuesday, 10 November.

Police received a call from a member of the community who informed them about a drowning.

Kagiso Police, and Search and Rescue rushed to the scene where they managed to remove the body from the water.

Brigadier Theron, the acting West Rand District Police commissioner, noted with sadness that a member of the community had passed away in this manner. She also extended her condolences to the man’s family. An investigation has since been launched.

Theron also appealed to anyone in the community who might have information on what, or what could have led to the drowning to come forward and contact the Kagiso Police on 011 696 9000 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.

The police have also released some water safety tips:

• Check the weather and tides before you leave home.

• Never swim when you are intoxicated.

• Avoid swimming immediately after a big meal as there is a danger of cramping.

• Never leave young children unattended near water.

• With the soaring temperatures, swimming in cool water brings some welcome relief. But drowning is an ever-present risk when people go on outings to rivers, beaches, dams and swimming pools.
