Cedar Market, Khosa celebrate together

As markets ease back into opening their doors to the public, Cedar Tree Craft Market and Khosa socialise together. Khosa is happy to announce the reopening of one of their big sports codes.

Ever since the Cedar Tree Craft Market nestled itself in the home of the Khosa Sports Club, it has seen exceptional growth and has become a place of warm welcomes for its visitors.

Far more than being a growing marketplace, it’s a social gathering point which meshes together the general public and members of the Khosa Club as they socialise. Khosa welcomed the market in as they believed it was time to open up even more to the community.

It gives the club the opportunity to show itself to the public. People sometimes think we’re an exclusive club, but that’s not the case. Anyone can come and sit at the bar and enjoy a drink with us,” explained club vice-chair and Khosa Rugby chair, Nico Swartz.

Having the market in their midst has helped them grow their membership by about 20 per cent in the past three months as lockdown regulations slackened, according to Nico.

During the Friday, 13 November night market, the Khosa Club held a kind of open day. Walking in, you first pass the arts and crafts and home-made styled stalls before finding yourself between the outside food-court stalls which are directly adjacent to the Khosa bar and hall.

With this flowing setup, Khosa was able to share some big news with a larger than ever crowd, and even gained a few members and players throughout the night.

As the overall sense of mirth reached its peak, Khosa announced that they had recently received the go-ahead to restart rugby practices on the coming Tuesday, 17 November, finally returning to some semblance of normalcy. Those who were there just for the good vibe enjoyed drinks and good food in the food-court area which was filling up by the moment.

Chris and Chanelle Visser were exhibitors themselves at the market’s old grounds about three years ago.

“The previous owners,” started Channele, “asked us if we wanted to take over the market. We moved to Khosa in December of 2018.”

When lockdown restrictions weren’t an issue, Chris noted that they easily had about 1 000 to 2 000 visitors to the market at each occasion. With December rolling around, the market’s schedule has changed slightly.

The day market will be open on 29 November, and 6 and 13 December, while the night market will be run on 18 December.

Finally, Nico urged the community to join the sports club.
