Kagiso Police have arrested five people aged between 22 and 39 following a hijacking in Sinqobile on New Year’s Eve.
Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson, described hijackings as a violent crime which leaves victims with lasting scars of trauma and hatred.
Perpetrators of this crime are merciless, dangerous, cruel and self-centred, with no respect for human life,” he said.
He explained that on 31 December at 4am a man arrived home and after parking his vehicle he went to open the gate. When the victim returned to his vehicle he noticed a man walking down the street alone. He suddenly walked towards the victim, took out a firearm from his jacket and pointed it at the victim.
“The victim ran for his life and jumped over his wall. He then noticed another person with his assailant as they sped off in his silver Mazda.”
The incident was reported to the Kagiso Police who then launched an investigation. This led to the arrest of five suspects.
They were detained at the Kagiso Police Station where a case of hijacking was opened.”
He explained that like other areas Kagiso also has had challenges with this type of crime. For this reason, Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander expressed his wish to see a significant decline in hijackings and other violent crimes in the area.
“He is determined to achieve that, but only if residents play their most crucial role of reporting or providing information to the police in time,” said Sibiya.
Maduna thanked his members for their hard work and commitment, and congratulated them on their success.
