‘Reckless’ driver assaults cop – two arrested

An officer who tried to stop a motorist after he was driving erratically, was assaulted.

Two motorists were arrested swiftly after disobeying and assaulting a police officer last week.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson said it had been in the spirit and context of restoring law and order that the concept of Okae Molao was introduced in the West Rand District, “… following gross defiance and undermining of the law by the majority of our citizens, including foreigners,” he said.

He explained that at about 2pm on Tuesday, 30 March, two traffic officers were on duty on Impala Road when they noticed a Renault allegedly driving in the middle of the road and from one lane to the other. The vehicle had two occupants.

When the officers signalled for the driver to stop, he refused and instead swore at the officers and showed them the middle finger.

When the driver later stopped at the intersection of the R558 and Impala Road near Tshepisong, he realised the officers had followed him.

When the officers approached the vehicle, the driver and his passenger stepped out but allegedly used vulgar language towards the officers again and charged at them.

“When one of the officers requested to search the vehicle, one of them attacked the officer by using his open hands to his face and strangling him.”

The two officers managed to subdue the two and arrested both. They were taken to the Kagiso Police Station where a case of assault, intimidation and reckless driving was opened.

“Anyone who undermines law enforcement will face the harshest side of the law. We would not hesitate to take appropriate actions against anyone who has an unruly and hostile attitude towards police officers whilst executing their official duties. People will respect the law, whether they like it or not,” warned Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander.
