Easter armed robbers caught swiftly

While families were celebrating Easter two opportunistic criminals saw their chance to rob someone, but they were quickly caught.

While South Africans were celebrating Easter weekend, two thugs saw their opportunity to rob a man at gunpoint.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson explained that the two 21-years-olds robbed the man of two cellphones on Themba Street at about 10pm on Saturday, 3 April.

“The victim managed to positively identify one of the suspects and informed the police,” Sibiya said.

The police then opened a case of armed robbery and a manhunt was launched for the suspect.

Sibiya said two days of intensified searching and investigation led to the arrest of the two suspects on 5 April at about 8pm, and they were later detained at the Kagiso Police Station.

“We want to appeal to members of the public to make it their responsibility to report illegal firearms in their areas. You don’t have to wait until you or relatives are affected before you report illegal firearms. Don’t look away and act as if you do not know or see anything because you might be the victim at any time. Just report it, make your area safe and remain anonymous,” urged the Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna.

Police are appealing to anyone with more information about illegal firearms in the wrong hands to call the Kagiso Police on 011 696 9000, 011 696 9059, 011 696 9065, 011 696 9067 or alternatively call the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111. Members of the public can also use the SMS line on 32211 or send their tip-offs via the My SAPS app and remain anonymous.
