Police in district arrest 115: 35 for drunken driving and more

Drunken driving, rape and kidnapping were among the crimes that the 115 suspects were arrested for this past weekend in the West Rand District.

Police arrested 115 suspects various crime stop operations in the West Rand District over the weekend.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police and the Bekkersdal Police, the arrests were made for crimes that include the following:

• One for murder
• Three for rape and attempted rape
• 15 for robbery and theft
• Two for kidnapping
• Eight for drug-related crimes
• Two for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
• Four for malicious damaged to property
• Seven for being in possession of copper cable and gold-bearing material

“During the operations, 35 people were also arrested for drunken driving, and illegally operated taverns were shut down and fines issued. All suspects were due to appear before their respective courts within the West Rand District,” Lefakane said.
