With the help of the community and other taxi drivers the Krugersdorp Police managed to arrest a 26-year-old man after he shot at a taxi driver.

The police have arrested a 26-year-old man for attempted murder. This follows a shooting on the corner of Von Brandis and Monument Streets at about 2.45pm on Monday, 10 May.

In a statement by the West Rand District Police, Sergeant Gloria Edith Maswanganye explained that the police received a call about a shooting and swiftly responded.

When they arrived on scene, the 26-year-old man was handed over to them after taxi drivers had apprehended him.

“It is alleged that one of the passengers in a white Quantum took out a firearm and shot randomly towards the driver of a stationary taxi,” said Maswanganye.

One of the passengers was injured by glass from the broken window and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The driver of the damaged taxi fled the scene, and other taxi drivers managed to apprehend the suspect and hand him over to the police.”

Major General Fred Kekana, the District Police Commissioner said, “Police will not tolerate any form of lawlessness, thus any form of attack will be dealt with accordingly”.

He commended the community members for working with police and not taking matters into their own hands.

Maswanganye said a police investigation is under way to establish the motive behind the shooting.
