Beloved Rant-en-Dal Spar employee dies

A loyal worker and friendly face at the Rand-en-Dal Spar, Jan Chanki Phillips, or oom Jan, has passed away.

When leaving this world one hopes to have left one’s mark. This could be said about Jan Chanki Phillips, or Oom Jan, as he was affectionately known for many years.

Oom Jan, who worked at the Rand-en-Dal Spar, passed away on 7 May. He was well loved and known by many in the community.

He started working at Spar in 1986 and served the company for 35 years.

“He will be sincerely missed by his loyal customers and co-workers. We will always cherish the wonderful memories of him,” said Spar manager Wesley Wait.

In a memorial post on Facebook many co-workers and customers commented.

“Rest in peace Oom Jan, you were a very wise man and one of the hardest workers I ever got to work with … you will be sorely missed,” read a post from Samantha De Jager-Menezes.
