Eight arrested in chase and shootout near nature reserve

Provincial Police responded to the incident near the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that eight suspects had been arrested and three unlicensed rifles and a pistol, four stolen vehicles and suspected stolen property were recovered after a courier vehicle was robbed in Rustenburg. The incident involved a shootout in Tarlton.

Provincial Police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela, said in a statement that the incident happened on 12 May at about 10am and that a manhunt is currently under way for the one remaining suspect who is still at large.

Explaining what had happened, Makhubela said the police were notified of the robbery in Rustenburg and that the suspects were driving towards Krugersdorp.

“The Serious and Violent Crime Unit, Rapid Response Services and other law-enforcement agencies were dispatched to search for the suspects.”

He said a Quantum, Ford Ranger, Iveco and Lexus with an unknown number of suspects that matched the description of the suspects’ getaway vehicles were spotted and police then tried to stop them.

A Ford Ranger was one of the getaway vehicles.

The suspects sped off in different directions and a high-speed chase ensued. A shootout followed after the suspects had fired shots at the police.

He confirmed that six suspects from the Quantum, one from the Iveco and one from the Ford Ranger were arrested. The Lexus was found abandoned with a pistol inside.

Another recovered firearm.

When police searched the Iveco they recovered goods that were reported stolen from the robbed courier vehicle.

“No one was reported injured following the shootout.”
