UPDATE: Dudley squeezes his mom’s hand

After being in a terrible car accident three weeks ago, Dudley Cole finaly squeezed his mothers hand and opened one of his eyes. There is still a long way to recovery but his family believes he will recover.

It is now almost three weeks since Dudley Cole was in a terrible vehicle accident which left him broken, bruised and in a coma.

At the accident scene on 15 May Dudley had to be resuscitated and was airlifted to hospital for immediate emergency care. His sister, Candice Cole, has been updating and thanking those who support them on a daily basis.

And it seems that things are taking a turn for the better for Dudley.

This week the doctors moved his feeding tube in order for him to get the right nutrition and also did a tracheostomy procedure to deliver more oxygen to his lungs.

Some highlights of his recovery this week were that he squeezed his mother’s hand when she spoke to him, and he opened his right eye when his wife, Ilze Cole was with him.

The nurses also told Candice that he indicated to them what he liked and didn’t like.

“I know it’s small steps and it will still be a while before he wakes up, but this meant the world to us. In these situations sometimes the simplest things mean the most.”

Dudley was also taken off morphine this week and on Thursday he moved a lot. Candice said tears rolled down his face.

“I think emotions just got the better of us (on Thursday, 4 June). Mom dried off his tears and I told him everything will be okay. I believe he heard everything mom said. I know we just need to be patient and continue to keep our faith up. And we will,” Candice said.

Dudley’s condition remains stable and doctors are making strides with his recovery. Candice asked their supporters to keep Dudley and their family in their prayers.

The Facebook page, My Brother she started serves two purposes – to keep the community, family and friends updated on Dudley’s condition; and to search for eyewitnesses to the collision. It is believed that another car was involved and might even have caused the terrible crash.
