Don’t fall prey to scammers, municipality warns

With increasing unemployment worsened by Covid-19, people are becoming more and more desperate for employment, and most sadly have fallen prey to job scams.

The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has warned residents to be cautious and not fall prey to scams doing the rounds.

In a statement released by Refilwe Mahlangu, MCLM said they have become aware of unauthorised individuals fraudulently advertising jobs, tenders, land and RDP houses. These offers are either made online or in person, and the victims are asked for upfront payments.

With increasing unemployment worsened by Covid-19, people are becoming more and more desperate for employment, and most sadly have fallen prey to job scams.”

Mahlangu added they have noticed people advertising jobs online using the municipality’s name and asking for upfront payments, for example a R900 fee for a health check-up.

Applying for employment at MCLM is free and the statement said anyone asking for money is breaking the law and most probably is not a MCLM employee.

“All vacant positions, tenders and quotations are only advertised in targeted national newspapers and on the MCLM website. No job adverts are placed on an online platform, whether credible or not. If the job listing is not on our website, it does not exist.”

Those posing as consultants or using online media platforms are fraudsters, and if you did not contact MCLM for a job but they contact you with an offer, it is a scam, Mahlangu added.

These scammers could have found your CV online and used your details to target you.

Mogale City never sends shortlisted candidates job offers or interview invitations via SMS or email. If you suspect to have received fraudulent communication from the municipality or have been approached by an individual or agency attempting to solicit a fee or request your banking details using the MCLM brand name or logo, please do not cooperate. We urge you to contact our Human Resources division on 011 951 2324 or 011 951 2585 to report scammers.”

Land or RDP fraud can be reported to the Gauteng Provincial Customer Service on 011 662 8300.
