Man found with illegal firearm during routine stop; also bribes police

A 30-year-old man has been charged with possession of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and ammunition, as well as bribery after a routine stop earlier this week.

A routine stop by the police led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya explained that their crime-prevention unit members were on patrol at about 18:30 on Monday, June 14 when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle near Rietvallei Extension 2 and 3.

“The police signalled the driver to pull over. As they searched him and his vehicle, they found a 9mm firearm with 17 rounds of ammunition on the man’s waist. The firearm’s serial number had been filed off.”

The man then tried to bribe the police with R800 cash, but was placed under arrest.

“These firearms cause a lot of fear and instability in our communities as people are killed and robbed daily. The successful removal of that firearm from the wrong hands has prevented another violent and deadly crime,” said Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna.

Captain Sibiya added the suspect has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as bribery. He will appearing in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court soon.

“The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in any violent crimes before.”
